Halloween Party Music Playlist
Last year, Julia and I had a halloween party for a group of friends. Of course, we needed music for the thing, and I was put in charge of that. I have a lot of music, so I figured it would be fun to put together a good halloween music playlist.
Unfortunately, whenever you look around for halloween music, you typically find CDs full of creepy sounds, thunderstorms, cackling, etc. While these CDs are definitely "halloween" they certainly aren't much fun to listen to. Generally they are obnoxious.
So last year, I set about trying to find good songs by regular artists that could go on the playlist. Every song had to be by someone who people would listen to regularly, and every song needed to relate to halloween in some way.
Considering the kind of music I listen to, this wasn't too terrible of a challenge, but it definitely was time consuming. I figured that I'd go ahead and publish the playlist in order to save anyone with similar goals from spending time on this.
Below is the complete playlist. It's total running length is a little over 8 hours, which is long enough for pretty much any party. If you have any suggestions for things to add, please feel free to leave comments, but remember that it has to be regular music that relates to halloween in some way, not actual halloween music.

oops, got my own website backwards :-o

hehe I was about to tell you to add Evanescence - Haunted, but you already got it. Great song.
10 October 2006, 2:42 amNice list btw, do tell us if your friends liked it.
Jason:
“Disarm” by the Smashing Pumpkins perhaps? You really need something by the Smashing Pumpkins just because of their name.
10 October 2006, 7:36 pmAlso, “It’s Halloween” by the Shaggs would be hilarious. Beware though, it’s the worst song ever created (…by humans).
Rod:
Jason, I have Bullet With Butterfly Wings on there :)

On a semi-related note, I’d highly recommend C17H19NO3’s (lovingly referred to as “Cithignoe” (hard C sound there) by myself and one other person) “Terra Null” in terms of ambient appropriate-for-Halloween-but-still-awesome music. http://www.grindertool.com/c17.html Fantastic stuff. Should be pretty easy to find. Doesn’t quite fit your criteria, but hey.
(The companion disc “Terra Damnata” is pretty lame - the one I’m talking about is mostly instrumental.)
10 October 2006, 8:26 pmCJ:
(well, I guess now that I listen to it again, Terra Null actually has more vocals in it than Damnata. Hm. Anyway I stand by the “lame” comment)

…how about The Mercyful Fate Medley by Metallica off Garage Inc…too many crazy!
11 October 2006, 7:01 amRuss:
Moon Over Bourbon Street by Sting, Horror Movie by Skyhooks, Deadeyes Open (Remix) by Severed Heads.
How about Ballad Of The Skeletons by Allen Ginsberg? Okay, maybe not.
11 October 2006, 4:01 pmRyan Ferneau:
How could you leave out the Monster Mash??
12 October 2006, 12:29 amJason:
Rod,
12 October 2006, 3:14 pmSorry, I looked through the list for “Smashing Pumpkins” not “The Smashing Pumpkins.” :-)
John C. Kirk:
I think you could get a couple of Meatloaf songs in there, e.g. “Bat out of hell” and “I’d do anything for love” (the latter has vampires in the music video, even if the song itself doesn’t seem that relevant).

Mr. Hilton,
13 October 2006, 7:59 pmJust wanted to say thank you. I’m a deployed soldier (deployed since July 2005) and my unit recently requested that I DJ our Halloween party this year. I’ve DJ’d for almost as many years as I’ve been a soldier (10yrs) and have to say that your list gave me the spark I needed to ensure my fellow soldiers a great time. Thanks again. PS: Midnight Syndicate (full alb.), Alice Cooper (Feed my Frankenstein), Billy Idol (In the Midnight Hour), Marylin Manson (I Put a Spell On You -also done by Bette Middler and Screamin Jay Hawkins)… I can go on more, but don’t want to use up all your space. Thanks Again for juste enough “spark”…..
Rod:
Mark,
Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the list, and thank you for your suggestions.
Good luck out there, wherever they have you. Hopefully you can be home sometime soon.

Extremely good list. There are certainly a few picks I’d disagree with, but you make up for it all just by including “Hell Awaits” by Slayer and a couple of AC/DC songs. My only criticism is that you left out the single best Satan-oriented song ever written: “Black Sabbath”, by the band of the same name. It’s fantastic.
15 October 2006, 4:54 amKatherine Baskin:
How about Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand”? I had it on my Halloween list last year, and it went over really well.
However, the music I added from Zombies Ate My Neighbors didn’t…
16 October 2006, 6:29 amCindy:
What about Ghostown by The Specials?
26 October 2006, 3:57 amJake:
Just found this list of random Halloween mp3s you might want to check out.
26 October 2006, 1:47 pmMaurs:
I would recommend Fingathing’s Iron Man from their new Apocalypso EP. They are british and obscure, but the song is just begging to be on a halloween playlist.
30 October 2006, 6:17 amMike C.:
I’m also setting up a playlist for Halloween. A few outside yours…Concrete Blonde “Bloodletting: The Vampire Song”; Warren Zevon “Werewolves of London”, and “92 Degrees” and “Cities in Dust” by Siouxsie and the Banshees (more Goth than Halloweenie…but danceable!)
