Great! I have two questions tough:
1. What Python book was that?
2. Do you ever apply for Google again?

Dmitry:

<blockquote>But do learn more ruby before criticizing it</blockquote>

What part of "First Impressions" confused you so thoroughly? :)

Dude, this post sucks :) just kidding. But do learn more ruby before criticizing it. Take a look at RoR ActiveRecord implementation -- it will "blow your fucking mind."

Good to hear from you again Rod.

I worked with Python a bit two summers ago, and agree with your assessment mostly. I thought it was well designed except for needing to put self almost everywhere and the fact that the main method requires eight underscores to type. The latter seems so cludgy in a language that is otherwise so clean.

Great write-up. You should watch a little debate between the Rails and Django guys. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2939556954580527226 , DHH comes off so cocky he should be an honorary American. The Python world has Django and TurboGears. Rails even took some concepts from Django (at the request of Dave Thomas). Working with Django was as smooth as Rails.

I think the single factor that determines if you're going to like Python is if you can deal with white space denoting blocks of code. If you've been burnt in the past (by make or whatever) then you rarely give the language a chance.

I've never seen another language that makes as much sense as Python. It just works, I can sling code so fast and it's so readable after.
